Heel Pain From Plantar Fasciitis

Posted on: 27 December 2017

Many people suffer from heel pain that is associated with a condition called plantar fasciitis. The disorder occurs due to inflammation of the fascia that runs the length of the foot. Here is a bit of information about plantar fasciitis and its treatment.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis can cause severe pain along the length of the foot, especially in the heel. If you suffer from the condition, you may find it difficult to walk, especially earlier in the day. In addition, you may experience extreme foot pain as you attempt to stand after sitting for a prolonged period.

The heel pain from the condition may be so excruciating that the sufferer may believe that a bone in the foot is broken. However, plantar fasciitis is not a type of fracture. Once the inflammation of the fascia subsides, the symptoms dissipate.

The discomfort of the condition may worsen after episodes of standing, walking, or exercising. However, during the activity, the pain may actually diminish.

Candidates of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis can affect practically anyone. However, certain factors may increase the likelihood of the condition. Here are a few of them:

  • Shoes that fit poorly
  • Lengthy periods of standing, walking, or running
  • Obesity
  • High arches
  • Flat feet

People who run regularly or are required to stand for long episodes for work often develop plantar fasciitis. Additionally, older people may be more likely to suffer from the disorder.

Treatment of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis has multiple treatment options. They include medication, exercise, orthotics, and even surgery.

Medication

Medicines that reduce inflammation may be used to help treat the condition. Pain reducers may also be employed

Exercise

Therapeutic exercises can help strengthen the foot and condition the fascia. Over time, the inflammation of the band of tissue can be lessened.

Orthotics

Orthotic inserts can help support the foot. As the foot is held in a proper position, the stress of the fascia is reduced.

Surgery

If other types of treatment don't reduce the heel pain, surgical intervention may be required. During the surgery, a portion of the fascia is cut to reduce the painful tension.

Regardless of the type of treatment used, the pain of the condition may not subside immediately. An episode of inflammation may require weeks or even months to fully diminish.
